Statement of Aims

The magazine I will be making is called Chiasso (meaning: noise in Italian), as the mainstream magazine focuses on political topics such as feminism, but also fashion and lifestyle; the word "noise" suggests raising awareness which is one of the themes in the magazine. I believe that this magazine would target the ABC1 demographic between the ages of 16 to 25. Topics such as fashion and feminism would predominantly target a female audience. Cover lines mentioning the Oscars covers the fashion and glamour theme of the magazine, and so does the feature article "21st Century Snow White", as it will speak about a new artist, music and female representation in the media. The rest of the cover lines also will cover other social issues like body autonomy, homophobia and feminism but still relate them to pop culture and lifestyle. I will have a monochrome colour palette of mainly black and white, in order to make the magazine appear more sophisticated and target the desired socio-economic groups. I don't want the cover star to be smiling, as the magazine has the tendencies of talking about female liberation and a smiling cover star could contradict that idea when it upholds certain stereotypes; the star will also have direct eye contact with they audience so that there is an established connection and trust with the magazine. I will pick a costume that's moderately revealing, as I don't believe that the star should need to cover up in order to be taken seriously. As the magazine is predominantly centred around stereotypically female interests, the slightly revealing look does not target the male gaze. The price would be £4.99 as this is an affordable price for the higher spectrum of the target audience - AB.

As well as the cover, I aim to produce a double page spread feature article about the main cover line "21st century Snow White". The article will consist of an introduction of the artist, information about the song and the making of the video, as well as an interview with Elina where she explains the meaning of her music video. There would be pull out quotes, on the part of the interview where she explores female representation, that would engage and inspire the younger spectrum of the audience. I intend to use formal language on her introduction and factual information, and less formal, familiar lexis in her interview, so that the audience can relate to the artist.

When shooting my video I will include many locations, with a range of outdoors and indoors settings. The narrative is inspired by the 19th century fairy tale Snow White and the seven Dwarfs, however in the narrative, Snow White is the "villain" as she has the qualities of the Evil Queen. In the plot, she poisons badly intentioned men with apples and puts them to sleep. I will explore female representation and the femme fatale trope in the music video, while challenging gender stereotypes. Some of the plot is also inspired by the 2016 film "The Love Witch". At the end of the video, the character will get away with the poisonings and not regret her actions. There will be a range of shots, many shot with the camera looking up in order to connote power. The costumes and props are also inspired by "The Love Witch"; in order to portray the stereotypical female qualities like naivety or vulnerability I will use costume and body language to represent it, and then have a complete change when the character is exhibiting the stereotypical femme fatale behaviour.
