What stereotypes, or ‘basic traits’, does Tide portray?

It portrays the idea of women being housewives and  enjoying doing domestic work

What inequalities could have led to the creation of this stereotype?

The fact that women were expected to stay at home and look after the children led men to consider women as inferior and inadequate out of the house

How do the images of domestic life form part of the “shared conceptual road map” that give meaning to the “world” of the advert?

David Gauntlett

Does the Tide advertisement support Gauntlett’s claim that in the past media representations offered singular straightforward messages about male and female identities?

Yes, as the only representation for females that is being offered in Tide is the one of the housewife.

To what extent does the representation of women in the Tide advert differ from those found in Adverts today? Give an example.

Adverts today would be controversial if they portrayed women as housewives. Women in adverts now would have more active roles that would traditionally be given to men, such as having a career, higher education, etc.

Van Zoonen

In what ways is the representation of women culturally specific?

In the 1950s women were strongly encouraged to stay home and be housewives

To what extent are women relegated to a passive role?

In this advert, the women are the subjects of the male gaze, however i don't think they are very sexualised as they are not showing much skin, although the colour red does have sexual connotations.

What symbols are exploited in Tide?

 Tide portrays women as housewives
