Wolves in Hollywood - title
Ideas:
The video is about the mistreatment and over-sexualisation of women in the film and music industry. The artists is a feminist and expresses her beliefs in the video; my main inspirations for the plot were Marilyn Monroe and Joan Collins - Marilyn Monroe had warned Joan collins - "Watch out for the wolves in Hollywood, honey"
Harvey Weinstein - sexual abuse of actresses, assistants, etc; covered it up with money, "false allegations"; victims - Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Asia Argento, Kate Beckinsale, Cate Blanchett, Cara Delevigne
Weinstein didn't have to admit his sexual misconduct allegations as he paid a 25 million dollar settlement. therefore the actress and model Emily Ratajkowski expressed her opinion at the premier of Uncut Gems in Hollywood. He is serving a 23 year sentence - found guilty of rape and sexual harassment; detained in Wende correctional facility in NY.
Me Too Movement - i could use the hashtags and slogans in the video and the article;
Founder: Tarana Burke; movement based on removing systems of oppression; Tarana Burke found the movement and actress Alyssa Milano re-tweeted it and made it viral.
Weinstein being convicted and jailed is a symbolic case in the Me Too movement, as a rich white man was convicted and suffered the consequences of his actions.
The artist in the video is inspired by the many cases of abuse and misogyny in the music/film industry. She tells the story of an actress that is tired of being overtly sexualised and exploited by men in power. "Carmen" takes the younger aspiring actress to show her the dark side of the show business and to warn her of the "wolves" the way Marilyn warned Collins. As Carmen sees her protege being abused as well, she decides to fight back and therefore joins the MeToo Movement and makes a statement on the red carpet.
The meaning of the song: The song is about Lolita; Carmen is one of Humbert's favourite nicknames for Lolita. the lyric "Telling them she's having fun", actually means "Telling Hum she's having fun", as Humbert (Hum) id Lolita's stepfather and lover. So, yet again, I can connect it to the exploitation of women in film, as most of them cannot book castings over a certain age; arguably, our beauty standards are paedophilic, therefore having Lolita as a reference ties in with Carmen's protege.
Genius - “Carmen” is the 9th track from Lana Del Rey’s album Born to Die.
The song’s 17-year-old protagonist suffers from substance abuse. Del Rey admitted in 2012 that she had a problem with alcohol when she was a teenager, but hasn’t had a drink for a number of years.
The setting of the song takes place in Coney Island, America’s original “Sin City”. As a fan of Nabokov’s important piece of literature Lolita, she is further inspired by another tale found within this literature, which references another tragic love story of Carmen by Prosper Mérimée.
In addition to that, her love for vintage and american writers is clear for references the play A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams.
My analysis of the song Carmen:
Darling, darling, doesn't have a problem
Lying to herself 'cause her liquor's top shelf - she thinks
It's alarming, honestly how charming she can be
Fooling everyone, telling Hum she's having fun
