  1. Apply the genre theory- how is the film similar/different to other films in the genre?

The film "Malena" falls into the romance and drama genre, but also war and comedy. At the beginning we can see the boy in the poster - Renato having an interest in Malena which creates the sense of a comedy as the age gap is ridiculous and he has no chance. However, as the film progresses we see the consequences from WW2, and what happens to Malena. The film gets more disturbing, as we see what Malena experiences in her narrow-minded community, and the film drifts away from the romance genre and goes more into drama. The film definitely falls into the war genre as we are exposed to the consequences of the war and what women had to do to survive on their own.

  1.  Are there any Binary oppositions evident in the poster?

 There definitely are binary oppositions in the poster. Firstly, the age gap between the characters is big as Renato is about 12 and Malena is in her mid twenties. Also, the age gap brings a power imbalance, and another binary opposition of weak and strong.

  1. What enigma Codes are in evident in the poster?

 Malena is the biggest image in the poster and she is closest to the audience, therefore connoting that she will be the main character in the story, whereas Renato is in the back, staring at Malena, connoting that he will be the side character. By justifying her closer to the audience, the producers encourage the audience to empathise with her. She is not making eye contact with the audience, but rather stares at the side. She could be telling the audience that she is in danger as she is looking out for herself. the fact that Renato has stopped in the middle and staring at Malena, builds the storyline of his infatuation with her.
